7 Ancient World Wonders


The Great Pyramid of Giza - built betweem 2700-2300 B.C. oldesta nd famous, still existing at the present times and popular tourist attraction.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon -built by Nebuchadnezzar about 600 B.C. to make his his queen happy, who missed the mountains, trees and flowers of her native land. The structure is non-existent but archeologist find evidence that theis garden existed during the ancient times.

The Statue of Zeus at Olympia- sculpted by the Greek Phidias about 430 B.C still of existent in Plympia.

The Temple of Artemis at Ephesus -about 555 B.C. by Croesus, king of Lydia and dedicated to the goddess Diana at Ephesus. It measured 300 by 150 feet, with columns 60 feet high. After it was burned down by Avandal, Alexander the Great rebuilt it.

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus - This tomb was built by the wife of the Carian ruler Mausolus in 353 B. C, fragments can be seen in the in Turkey and at the British Museum.

The Colossus of Rhodes - Built by sculptor Chares in 280 B.C with one hand, and one eyes. It stands over 100 feet tall.This majestic work of art destroyed by Arabs in the 7th century A.Dbroken into smaller pieces and sold it as scrap metal.

The Lighthouse of Alexandria- It was built in 279 B.C. on the small island of Pharos by Sostratus of Cnidus for Ptolemy II. The lighthouse was over 400 feet high. The remains of this imposing structure could still be seen in 1480, when the Mamluk ruler Qa'it Bay constructed a fort on the exact site of the lighthouse.
